I went out to the site you gave for "Abandoned by God," and the link does not work. However, you can still get to the MP3 sermon by Dr. John MacArthur by using the following:
http://www.sbts.edu/resources/Audio_Resources/Chapel_Messages/Fall_2006.aspx
I listened to his sermon and agree with every word of it. It was most true of my life and the only way out is deep repentance.

Hi Peter,
These are some of the terms I would use to describe God and His character:
All-powerful, all-knowing, and Ever-present. Holy, righteous, and just. Loving, gracious, and merciful.
Any anger God has is righteous anger, and yes, the unrighteous, those not covered by the precious blood of Christ, should fear the just judgment of God.
It is, however, God's holiness, righteousness, love, grace, and mercy which inspire me to respond in kind, and seek to honor and bring glory to Him each and every day.
The fear of hell may initially direct some toward God, but it is gratitude for His redemption, never fear, that will lead us to serve Him with joy.

Thanks for this interesting poll, Peter.
I have ticked yes to all.
Re. vengeance. God will avenge the righteous who have been slaughtered for the sake of Jesus Christ but I would not say that he is vengeful as a principal characteristic. It must depend on the context. Other characteristics - loving, forgiving, are more in evidence, in my opinion.
