Hi, all.
I've received an email by a doctorate student from the UK doing research comparing the childhood experiences of people who go on to develop sexual, drug, alcohol and gambling addictive or compulsive behaviours.  If you're interested in being surveyed, please follow her instructions which she'll post in this thread. Responses will be completely anonymous, of course.

Hi!

My name is Sarah Clayton and I am the doctorate student from the UK mentioned above. Firstly thanks for even viewing this thread. Secondly, if you are interested in completing the online study please read the information below and follow the link.

Childhood experiences of adults with sex, gambling, drug and/or alcohol difficulties.

  • How does somebody develop an addiction?
  • Are there childhood experiences that make it more likely that someone will develop such difficulties?
  • Do those with such difficulties have different kinds of influential child experiences?
If you are interested you can help me research and answer these questions. If you are over 18 and feel you have some difficulties with compulsive use of sex, drug, alcohol or gambling then you are invited to follow this link and complete the online survey.

It should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Hopefully you will find the questions interesting, whilst adding to the literature on compulsive behaviours to inform professionals in the future.

I know it is yet another online survey, but I would really appreciate your views and/or time on this as it is part of my training to become a clinical psychologist and I would like to get as much of an understanding of what it is like to experience an addiction.

Thanks for your time.

Best wishes

Sarah

Hey

I hope you are all doing ok. Firstly thanks for even looking at this post. I can see that quite a few people have viewed the post and possibly even followed the link to survey.

I would therefore like to ask what's stopping people from completing the questions....the length? The personal nature of the questions? Your thoughts on this are really appreciated as I want to get as many people as possible to complete the questions and therefore if there is something that is stopping people, please can you tell me?

Thanks for your time.

Sarah:)

Hi it's me again!

A few months down and it is almost time for my to take my survey offline so I can analyse the results. Yet again thanks to those who have shown interest so far and for those that are thinking about taking part, now is your last chance as I plan to go offline at the end of April.

I have lots of respondents with drug, alcohol and gambling difficulties, yet those with compulsive or addictive sexual behaviours and thoughts (the ones I'm most interested in) are far fewer. So please please, if you feel you do have some difficulty with your sexual behaviours and/or thoughts, please complete my survey or pass on the link to others you think may be interested.

Thanks again for all your help. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Best wishes

Sarah

Hi Sara,

I filled out the questions in the survey, and left some comments in the box at the bottom (I'm very verbose, and just simply checking a box to answer a serious question can seem misleading and counterproductive to me - especially if the wording of the question seems to imply something which by answering with a check could be misleading).

I didn't understand what a "GP" is ? (Maybe some kind of school counselor and/or "General Physician" or something of that nature?) Don't worry though, if the questions in that survey could "upset" me. I suppose dealing with the questions posed to me on this forum would have long ago sent me into Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome!

(By the way, Devastated Wife may still be waiting for my response to one her most recent questions .. which I'll likely tackle this coming weekend or sooner).

Thanks for doing the survey and I hope what you learn will be of help to others who have suffered as I have.

-Dennis

GP = general practitioner = family doctor = primary care physician.

Two countries divided by a common language, as they say. (Though GP is certainly a US term, too, just one diminishing in usage here, I think.)

Thanks so much for filling in my survey. I really do appreciate it.

Thanks for pointing out about GP.....I'm sorry- it's an English term for General Practitioner, meaning the doctor you go to when you are poorly with general problems like flu, infections etc.

Thanks also for your comments on the end. Obviously the study is anonymous, so I won't know who you are, but all comments are welcome, as they give me more things to think about.

Thanks again. Take care

Sarah
